Briefwell: cited research briefs generated behind the firewall for regulated firms

daily ideamoderateJEV confidence 0.572026-10-03
OutcomeCompliance-grade research briefs with verifiable citations, generated in under a minute on the firm's own servers, never touching a third-party API.

The problem

Law firms, consultancies, and pharma regulatory teams need literature-style evidence synthesis, but their documents cannot leave the building. Cloud research assistants are disqualified by data policy. Existing open options either run slow multi-step pipelines or cannot produce properly cited reports, and teams fall back to manual synthesis that takes days.

The idea

A self-hosted appliance (Docker container) that turns a firm's internal document corpus into cited briefs. Retrieval (Cohere Embed 5) and extraction (LlamaIndex Extract) feed excerpts into Ai2's AstaBrief 8B, which writes the full cited report in a single forward pass in ~51 seconds. Every claim links back to its source page. A verification pass re-checks each citation against the extracted text and flags unsupported claims before delivery. The whole pipeline runs inside the customer's VPC on a single GPU.

Why now

Ai2 released AstaBrief 8B on Oct 2: an 8B open-weights model (Apache 2.0, Qwen3-8B base) that matches the report quality of the Claude-powered pipeline it replaced in Asta while running 3.5x faster (51.1s vs 178.5s) at a fraction of the serving cost, explicitly positioned for behind-the-firewall deployment on sensitive work. The retrieval and extraction layers that feed it (fast embedders, document extraction) are now commodity open components. The three-piece pipeline is newly assemblable by a small team.

What it combines

AstaBrief 8B (one-pass cited report generation, open weights, single-GPU) + Cohere Embed 5 fast retrieval + LlamaIndex Extract document extraction. Any one alone is a component; together they are a complete cited-report factory that fits inside a regulated firm's VPC, which neither cloud deep-research products nor general open models can offer.

MVP

Weekend scope: Docker container with upload-PDFs endpoint, embed + retrieve, extract key passages, AstaBrief generation, and a markdown report with inline citation links and an unsupported-claim flag list. Deliberately skip: multi-tenancy, auth/SSO, connectors to document management systems, scheduled briefs.

Distribution

B2B: sell to law firms, management consultancies, and pharma regulatory affairs teams at per-brief or per-seat pricing. B2B2C wedge: embed as a module inside document-management platforms (iManage, NetDocuments) and Veeva-style regulatory suites that already own the regulated user.

Why it wins

OpenAI/Anthropic Deep Research and Perplexity are cloud-only, so they cannot touch unpublished internal corpora. Ai2's own Asta platform targets scientific researchers, not regulated enterprises, and is not packaged as a deployable appliance. Briefwell's wedge is the deployment shape: cited synthesis behind the firewall, with per-claim citation verification that compliance teams can audit.

Risks

Citation hallucination on unfamiliar internal jargon could erode trust with compliance teams. De-risk: the MVP ships the verification pass and a human sign-off step by default, so every brief is a draft with receipts rather than a final answer.
