ByteDance Doubao phone assistant SAEP protocol graduates: third-party screen automation goes default-open
ByteDance's Doubao mobile assistant ended the 30-day public review of its Screen Automation Execution Protocol (SAEP) on Oct 14, switching third-party app GUI automation to default-open, while 151-155 apps (WeChat, Alipay, Taobao, Kimi, DeepSeek) formally opted out.
Why it matters
First machine-readable consent protocol for GUI agents at phone-OS scale, and the opt-out list maps exactly where China's super-app moats refuse agent entry.

An indie developer building a phone-based helper for elderly users could copy SAEP's machine-readable consent idea: before the helper automates anything, each app's public declaration states which pages are allowed, so the product ships with an auditable permission layer instead of risky raw screen-scraping.
Does it hold up?
Too early to judge: the graduated protocol only began rolling out on Oct 14, and with 150+ top apps opted out on day one, real-world coverage across apps is unproven.
